The art of creating a sandwich is a delicate one but knowing the right sandwich toppings is what makes a good meal! From dressings to vegetables and even certain types of cheeses, there are A LOT of things you can put on a sandwich to bring a new flavor to your (presumably) meaty concoction. The beautiful thing with toppings is sometimes they’re tried and true, always being a part of the sandwich you expect them to be on but other times they’re unique and change everything! Here are a few of the ways you can top your sandwich to add some new flavor to your next lunch (or breakfast or dinner… whenever!)
We’re going to start off with one of the most distinguished sandwich toppings around (that’s clearly not limited to sandwiches). BBQ adds boldness to whatever dish it is a part of that is almost impossible to replicate. BBQ usually pairs nice with some ribs or burgers’, so adding it to a sandwich isn’t too much of a stretch. When topping a nice brisket or roast beef, BBQ sauce can become the one of the ultimate sandwich toppings!
Usually topped on a meaty hot dog or a Reuben, Sauerkraut adds a texture and tang to whatever it is a part of. Sauerkraut itself is actually raw cabbage that has been fermented in a specific type of acid, providing it its distinct “sour” taste. Adding a bit of sour to your meaty sandwich might seem blasphemous, but it adds a dynamic taste that works well with certain types of meat. This will change your sandwich!
Onion is oddly divisive when it comes to being a sandwich topping but if we’re judging it on how much it truly changes a meal, well… It does EXACTLY that. A red onion in particular works really well with sandwiches of a certain kind. Have lots of veggies, some ham or more Mediterranean ingredients? Red onion might be for you! With a different texture and a strong presence, a couple of diced red onions will make for some of the more distinctive sandwich toppings.
Pesto somehow finds its way to both sandwiches and pasta, and for good reason! Originating from Genoa, Italy, this sauce has a variety of ingredients that combine to excellence. At its base, pesto contains garlic, pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, Parmesan cheese, pecorino sardo and olive oil. The combination of these ingredients makes for a versatile sauce that has its own unique taste. Pesto goes great with a tomato or Italian based sandwich!
